Each Participant was asked to bring fabric that would otherwise be thrown away. Some of the materials participants brought included:
Shug-I contributed a pillowcase from my parents house, appears as thick floral upholstery fabric. An obi (kimono belt) from a former lover's mom, clothing tags from my dads ties and my own old clothes, and scrap fabric I found pinned on a chair for solid waste in my neighborhood.
Julianne - I contributed a yellow pillowcase with an owl design on it, which was a childhood pillowcase of my mother's in the 70s. An orange/pink fabric with a repeating half circle motif that I had used to make a reversible book cover.
Tova- I contributed patterned fabric from Mom’s quilting stash; worn-out corduroy pants from my sister; tulle, lace, and velvet from art school free pile; secondhand buttons and embroidery floss
Hannah- I contributed striped orange-toned hand-me-down dish towel from my big sister which I got with kitchen supplies when I moved into my first apartment in college - I had used until it had too many holes, blue sweatshirt material from a sweatshirt that I thrifted and then cropped, a brown velvet scrunchie that was left on the sidewalk in front of my house
Nico- I contributed ace bandages from recovering from top surgery, medical waste that I couldn’t bring myself to throw away and wanted to find a use for because the fabric has such a fun pattern and texture. I also added highlighter colored cotton that was scraps from sewing a halloween costume.
Annabel- I contributed an old button up shirt that I used as a butter halloween costume a few years ago.
KC- I contributed floral gold jacquard fabric from my friend’s grandma (from her Californian house in the 1970’s), several pieces of scrap fabric from one of my fashion design internships, some strips from a friend’s striped t-shirt that they cropped, scraps from one of my flannel button ups that I cropped, and lastly corduroy and velvet scraps from my personal quilting projects.
